Meljoann – Overtime
A new single from Brighton-based performer Meljoann, a follow-up to ‘Trophy Wife’ in 2020. That was a complex mix of rowdy beats and handclaps, doomy synths and a vocal simultaneously fighting the music and gluing it all together. Now ‘Overtime’ is another example of Meljoann’s production skills – the mellow feel of the keys and descending chord sequence belies the hard-hitting lyric. With a dense narrative of sinister motives and discomfort in an office job ‘….for a reference..one day…he leans in over her and over-explains…’ the song, vocal performance and the accompanying surreal images in the video create an atmosphere that combines the personal and wider experience of work culture into a thoughtful and very listenable piece of pop performance art.
