Post your questions for Geoff Barrow, of Portishead, Beak> and more

Not content with co-creating one of the defining groups of the 1990s in Portishead, Geoff Barrow went on to make four acclaimed albums with psych-rockers Beak>, a host of film scores and more. Now, as he moves into film production, he’ll be answering your questions.

Barrow grew up in Somerset, including in the town of Portishead which gave his band their name. Alongside Beth Gibbons and Adrian Utley, they created a prowling, nape-prickling sound which would be filed in the trip-hop genre, and which has proved hugely influential. They released three albums and still occasionally perform live, most recently at the Together for Palestine benefit concert in September.

Beak> meanwhile formed in 2007 and are still going, though Barrow left in 2024 saying he wanted to focus on other projects (a send-off tour was given a five-star rave review in the Guardian). Barrow also founded the record label Invada, putting out records by the likes of Billy Nomates, Benefits and Gazelle Twin as well as the scores to Stranger Things, Drive, Red Dead Redemption and more. He did hip-hop project Quakers and in partnership with Ben Salisbury scored films such as Ben Wheatley’s Free Fire and Alex Garland’s Ex Machina, Annihilation, Devs, Men and Civil War.

When he left Beak> he cited “other work I need to do before I get too old”, and that is now coming to fruition. Barrow has created a film production arm of Invada and is putting out their first film, Game, on 21 November. With a story co-written by Barrow, and starring Sleaford Mods’ Jason Williamson, it’s a thriller set against the backdrop of the 1993 rave scene.

Barrow will answer your questions about that and anything else in his richly varied creative life – post them in the comments below before Thursday 6 November.
