TOPS – Party Again
Wistful vocals and electronic instrumentals are the backbone of the new single from indie pop band TOPS, and the tune is undeniably charming. Dreamy and upbeat, this release from the Canadian four piece is nothing short of perfectly timed. Its lyrics, delivered in singer Jane Penny’s characteristically breathy style, talk us through the highs and lows of missing someone you usually party with, and the euphoric happiness that comes from being reunited with them. The track has already been dubbed a ‘pop anthem’ by Stereogum, and, given its appeal to both the hopeless romantic and the non-stop party-goer, it’s easy to see why.
Despite its melancholic undertones, the two-minute tune packs a soft but spirited punch. David Carriere’s guitar and Marta Cikojevic’s keyboards carry the charm and nuance of conventional indie pop, while the abrupt moments of silence ready us for the occasional launch back into the track’s rhythmical drumbeat. Penny’s vocals still carry an air of youthful innocence, but the tune’s overarching themes of longing, lust and desire elevate the track to a plain beyond that of traditional twee pop.
It wouldn’t be difficult to imagine this new release as the soundtrack to the final scenes of a John Hughes-esque coming-of-age movie, owing to its bouncy synths and airy vocals. The tune encapsulates that all-to-familiar mix of excitement and apprehension that comes before a big night out, and it will no doubt have its listeners itching to get back to partying with their favourite people.
