Yammerer – The Beachgoer
‘The Beachgoer’ is without doubt one of the more left-field releases from the last few months in the UK rock scene. If you’re a fan of the often frenetic and ferocious five-piece from Liverpool, their new release is something of a new direction for the band.
To me, this track combines the slow, siren-like guitars of 90s Britpop with the spoken, occasionally strained voices of 70s and 80s indie punk artists (I was thinking of Nico when I was listening) but incorporating the sounds of waves splashing to add to the laid-back feel. To me, it’s a clash of vibes. I can’t shift the image of rainy, gritty guitar rock from the instrumentation, but also I want to run on red-hot sand and bask in thirty-degree summer. The entire essence of ‘The Beachgoer’ is that of atmosphere – it makes a world which is new and conflicted, and manages to produce a sound which is nothing short of majestic.
This song is five minutes of different sounds and textures, different vibes. The track concerns a protagonist who finds liberation when the path he’s taking removes all other options – Yammerer are no stranger to considering the existential, and perhaps this is why they do it so well. Wherever this new sound takes Yammerer, I want to be there with them.
