Alien Weaponry
On Friday, February 7th, Slayer’s iconic guitarist Kerry King played his first ever solo show in New York at New York City’s Irving Plaza to a sold out crowd of 1,200 raging metal heads.
The young New Zealand trio of Alien Weaponry got the crowd warmed up on the frigid February New York City night as they ripped through their set with their Māori groove form of metal. With fans already feeling the heat, Virginia’s very own thrash metal party animals Municipal Waste got the pit opened up, necks snapping and bodies flying opening up their set with Garbage Stomp. Municipal Waste was their usual selves on stage, displaying that intense energy they’re so well known for with frontman Tony “Buzz” Foresta being his usual witty self on the mic.The band continued to lay “Waste” throughout their set with a plethora of classic smashers that included Slime and Punishment, You’re Cut Off, Wave of Death, and closing things out with a heavy fan fav Born to Party. Despite the energy and intensity of both opening bands, fans were frothing at their mouths for The King and his all-star line up super group of Death Angel’s amazing frontman Mark Osegueda, King’s longtime Slayer bandmate drummer Paul Bostaph, former Machine Head and Vio-Lence guitarist Phil Demmel, and Hellyeah bassist Kyle Sanders.
As the lights dimmed and this all star lineup took to the stage, fans erupted into a thunderous roar as the bands 19-song set got underway with Where I Reign. At times at the back of the venue it was hard to hear the band over the crowds constant animalistic growls and chants of Slayer that came from both the floor and the upstairs balcony. The crowd would continue their thunderous roars throughout the set especially during the gifting of Slayer hits that included the deep classic At Dawn They Sleep. King and his all star lineup would take things back in time with a tribute from one of King’s most early influences, playing two very deep cuts from Iron Maiden, two that even Maiden themselves haven’t played live in some time, Purgatory and Killers. With these two classic gems fans truly began loosing their minds, but it wasn’t until the red lights hit and the beat of Bostaph‘s drums began the intro to one of Slayer’s and very notably thrash metals all time classic songs ever written Raining Blood. It would most definitely be safe to say faces were melting at this point. With all said and done. King’s All Star lineup was incredible live. Front man Mark Osegueda blew my mind with his performance on both the Slayer and Maiden covers. For all the haters out there bitching that King’s new album just sounds like Slayer, do yourselves a favor and make it out to the live show, it’s worlds apart from the LP.
