The King’s Birthday Honours is a list that highlights the people who have made a difference and have done good within the 15 Commonwealth realms and comes around every year on the King’s birthday.

And this year, King Charles III appointed several notable figures – such as author Pat Barker, footballer David Beckham, actor Gary Oldman – including The Who frontman, Roger Daltrey.

The 81-year-old was recognised “for services to charity and to music” according to the official government document.

The document also highlighted that he was receiving knighthood particularly for his patronage of Teenage Cancer Trust, a program that he helped launch alongside the orchestral concert venue in the UK, Royal Albert Hall.

Since 2000, Daltrey has helped Teenage Cancer Trust host gigs, music and comedy alike, to fundraise for kids from 13 to 24 with cancer. In a statement from Daltrey, he was incredibly gracious, but took the time to highlight a group of others that have made the charity so successful, helping to “elevate the charity, to the point where it now has 28 specialist units in NHS hospitals across the UK.”

The Who posted his statement to the band’s Instagram account alongside comments of their own as they celebrated the news, addressing Daltrey as Sir Roger Daltrey:

“It’s with the greatest pleasure we’re delighted to announce that Sir Roger Daltrey CBE has been recognised with a Knighthood in HM The King’s Birthday Honours. It’s richly deserved not just for his remarkable contribution to British music and culture for over half a century, but for the tens of millions of pounds that his relentless fundraising and brilliant live performances have generated for Teenage Cancer Trust among other causes.

Sir Roger is a true inspiration and we salute him and all the other honourees from the worlds of music and the creative arts for enriching our lives with their brilliant human artistry and achievements.”

Sir Daltrey added, “It is a wonderful honour for me and especially for Teenage Cancer Trust. I accept this award not only for myself but on behalf of all the unsung heroes who have given their energy towards making the Teenage Cancer Trust the success it has become. The likes of The Who and their fans, Angie Jenkison, Lindsay Hughes, Des Murphy, Rob Ballantine and the late Chris York are some of many who have done so much to elevate the charity, to the point where it now has 28 specialist units in NHS hospitals across the U.K.”
