The 10 Greatest Covers Of OZZY OSBOURNE & BLACK SABBATH Songs

The legacy of Ozzy Osbourne will surely live forever, thanks in part to the legendary musicians who chose to honor the Prince of Darkness on tape.
From doomy and soulful covers of Black Sabbath‘s saddest songs to soaring renditions of Ozzy Osbourne anthems, here’s the 10 of the best Ozzy covers you’ll ever hear.
This is the penultimate example of “making a cover your own.” Type O Negative recorded this brilliant, vampiric rendition of “Black Sabbath,” but retooled the lyrics to come from Satan’s perspective. The use of piano for Tony Iommi’s iconic tritone riff turns this cover into a whole new monster… required listening for any Ozzy fan.

In case Type O is too upbeat for you, here’s Ulver covering Black Sabbath‘s “Solitude.” Ulver were smart enough to choose the perfect Sabbath song to fit their style, rather than just doing “Paranoid” or “Iron Man.” A perfect tribute to Ozzy‘s ode to loneliness.

Sorry Yungblud, this is the most incredible cover of “Changes” that will ever exist. Charles Bradley‘s pure vocal chops and soulful vulnerability make this one of the best cover songs in history. You don’t doubt the authenticity of Bradley‘s pain for a second.

Some covers just fall perfectly into place. Powerwolf take a sophisticated, somewhat controlled approach to this werewolf ode. It’s just solid as can be — lush with keyboard soundscapes, phenomenal guitar work and killer vocals.

Faith No More put a tiny bit of swing on this Black Sabbath cover, shaking off the powerful rigidity of Iommi, Butler and Ward just a tad. Plus, you just can’t go wrong with Mike Patton. The dude’s vocal abilities are superhuman.

Is it technically a cover if you helped write the original? Regardless of semantics, Motörhead‘s version of “Hellraiser” is just as badass as the Ozzy Osbourne version, and may edge it out slightly for how much fucking filth Motörhead inject into the chorus.

We were tempted to include Pantera‘s cover of “Hole in the Sky,” but “Planet Caravan” is just too undeniable. The Cowboys From Hell just threw so much soul and torment into this Sabbath classic. Pantera‘s music video for “Planet Caravan” may be one of the worst ever made, but the song is a 10/10.

That desert rock guitar tone was tailor made for Sabbath covers, and Kyuss picked the perfect Iommi riff to crunch through. It gets even better after the first verse when Kyuss pull back into soft guitar and bongo drums. Special shout out to Soundgarden‘s cover of “Into the Void” as well.

On a tribute album filled with monster acts like Megadeth, Sepultura and Bruce Dickinson, Ugly Kid Joe managed to stand out with this phenomenal cover of Sabbath‘s “N.I.B.” There’s nothing crazy or offbeat going on here… it’s just purely awesome.

Holy fuck… now this is a cover! Led by the guitar mastery of Yngwie Malmsteen and the soaring vocals of Tim ‘Ripper’ Owens, this version of “Mr. Crowley” refuses to be anything but epic. Flawless execution.
