The Weekly Injection: New Releases From THE CALLOUS DAOBOYS, PELICAN & More Out This Week 5/16

This week’s new heavy metal releases include a lot of earworms, a lot of nastiness, and more! To the metals…

The Callous Daoboys – I Don’t Want To See You In Heaven

The Weekly Injection: New Releases From THE CALLOUS DAOBOYS, PELICAN & More Out This Week 5/16

Genre: Mathcore/nu metal
Origin: Atlanta, Georgia
Label: MNRK Heavy

Album number three from the ever-experimental Callous Daoboys is once again a combination of chaos, melody, nostalgia, and originality. It’s almost cliché to say this album contains their most _____ sounds, but it’s true across the board. Accessible or off-putting, this has all of that to the max.

Full Of Hell – Broken Sword, Rotten Shield

The Weekly Injection: New Releases From THE CALLOUS DAOBOYS, PELICAN & More Out This Week 5/16

Genre: Grindcore
Origin: Ocean City, Maryland
Label: Closed Casket

Over seven tracks you’re getting a brief but fairly comprehensive overview of what Full of Hell does on their own. This has hardcore rage, rocking rhythms, death metal nastiness, and even some subtle shoegaze tucked in there. It’s probably not enough to keep long-time fans satiated, but I’d wager they’re have a collaboration album before year’s end.

LarcɆnia RoɆ – Extraction

The Weekly Injection: New Releases From THE CALLOUS DAOBOYS, PELICAN & More Out This Week 5/16

Genre: Deathcore
Origin: North Carolina
Label: Unique Leader Records

The debut full-length from this outfit fucking hurts. This sounds like surgery being performed in the back of a van speeding down a bumpy road accompanied by a wonderfully pingy snare drum. All the visuals surrounding this release would make me think that’s the goal, and goal achieved. You’re getting a lot of guest spots on this sonic operation like Alex Koehler (Chelsea Grin), Lwandile (Vulvodynia) and more.

Mares Of Thrace – The Loss

The Weekly Injection: New Releases From THE CALLOUS DAOBOYS, PELICAN & More Out This Week 5/16

Genre: Sludge/post-metal
Origin: Calgary, Alberta
Label: Artoffact Records

Next up we have Mares of Thrace keeping things angry and really heavy. Through the entire record they are weaving between lurching sludge and crushing hardcore. They’re hitting you with so much urgency and emotion it’s hard to keep up or catch your breath.

Pelican – Flickering Resonance

The Weekly Injection: New Releases From THE CALLOUS DAOBOYS, PELICAN & More Out This Week 5/16

Genre: Post-metal/doom
Origin: Chicago, Illinois
Label: Run For Cover

Buy now on Bandcamp

On their first record in six years, these instrumental post-metal masters are back in a big way. Part of this back-ness is that they returned with their founding guitarist Laurent Schroeder-Lebec for the first time since 2012’s Ataraxia/Taraxis. As you’d hope this is a record atmosphere and walls of sound that both wash over you and crush you.

Sleep Theory – Afterglow

Genre: Alternative/nu metal
Origin: Memphis, Tennessee
Label: Epitaph

After breaking into the modern metal scene in 2023 with a series of catchy and genre-bending singles and an EP, Sleep Theory are finally dropping their debut full record. This album with get you dancing and headbanging. I sang the praises of Sleep Token last week with their combination of pop and metal. Well, I must sing the same praises here, but Sleep Theory are doing so with more energy.

Steve Von Till – Alone In A World Of Wounds

The Weekly Injection: New Releases From THE CALLOUS DAOBOYS, PELICAN & More Out This Week 5/16

Genre: Folk/experimental
Origin: Oakland, California
Label: Neurot Recordings

Steve Von Till is a busy, busy man in is post (?) Neurosis life. Last year he dropped three records as Harvestman and he’s already back, but this time under his name. Alone an a World of Wounds is closer to this recent output than his sludge days, but it has more of a proper song structures. There are a few friends helping him here like Ben Greenburg (Uniform) on drums for a song, Brent Arnold (Myrkur) on cello throughout, Dave French (Yob) on keys for a song, and many others.
