VOIVOD To Release Always Moving: The Strange Multiverse Of Voivod

Author Jeff Wagner has confirmed the release of Always Moving: The Strange Multiverse of Voivod — a mammoth new oral history chronicling the 40+ year saga of Canada’s cosmic metal innovators. The book arrives November 17, 2025, via Wagner’s own Radical Research imprint.

Always Moving is no slim fan zine. Weighing in at 3 pounds and 540 pages (plus a 12-page color spread), the book digs into every strange and brilliant turn of Voivod‘s career. Wagner conducted interviews between 2020 and 2024 with band members, managers, producers, label heads, family, and a roll call of peers and acolytes — from members of Opeth, Cynic, and Enslaved to underground lifers in Deceased, Virus, and Gorguts.

The result, says Wagner, is a definitive document of the band’s constantly mutating sound and their battles to endure both tragedy and triumph. Pre-orders are available now exclusively through Radical Research.

Wagner‘s relationship with Voivod runs deep. A fan since 1985, he has interviewed the band repeatedly since the early ’90s, written bios for their self-titled 2003 and Target Earth albums, worked as product manager for The Wake at Century Media, and provided liner notes for their 40th anniversary set Morgoth Tales.

Reflecting on the project, he says: “It’s a total honor to have written this book. The band were entirely forthcoming and super-helpful with their time, as was their manager, James MacLean. I spoke to every living member – except one – for this book.

“I also spoke with folks like Monte Conner, Brian Slagel, Glen Robinson, Wayne Archibald, Harris Johns, Ian Christe, and members of Opeth, Cynic, Anekdoten, Virus, Deceased, Sindrome, Agalloch, Therion, Enslaved, The Accused and Gorguts – and a bunch of other folks! – to help get the most rounded, complete picture of the band’s influence and impact from people who have been close to them in a variety of capacities.”

If the book sounds exhaustive, that’s because it is. “And I held nothing back,” Wagner continues. “There’s almost no stone left unturned, hence the size of the book. Even the two Appendixes are total nerd-fests that I think fans will find amusing and interesting. I know I’m psyched with the book, as a fan, so I think a lot of other diehard Voïvodians will be too.”
