WIND WALKERS Debut New Single, “Silk & Static”

It’s your resident modern metal editor reporting for duty, so if you’re in the market for some old-school metal, I deeply apologise that you may think Wind Walkers may not be for you, but I argue that Wind Walkers have something going on at the moment that is simply too good to ignore. They shine with a nu-metal pop fusion that both grooves and rages across their discography.
In their Spotify bio, the band writes, “We’re Wind Walkers. We know – we used to be heavier.”
And it’s true – they’re not the heaviest, and they were heavier in earlier years. Yet, they still tear through breakdowns with ease and return to melodies as if it’s their native tongue, and something needs to be said about bands that are making metal more accessible to those who are venturing into the genre, and may be intimidated by the full package that metal offers.
Classic metal and the subgenres that have spawned from that overarching genre may not be the most palatable with the amount of rage and emotion that is encapsulated in each song – and it can take a little while to learn how to decipher some vocalists’ screams. So bands like Wind Walkers fuse metal with elements of R&B, prog, and pop, soaring with melodies throughout choruses and breaking down in the bridge. And that in itself can make it easier – did anyone else see the one girl on TikTok who discovered she liked breakdowns because of Sleep Token?

Not quite filling the full-blown prog shoes that ISSUES left when they split up, Wind Walkers could be for fans of Bring Me The Horizon with their technical, industrial, hyper-pop elements littered throughout their newest song, “Silk & Static,” but they also could be for fans of Bad Omens with “The End Aesthetic.” And, “Eating My Heart Out” would easily fit in with I Prevail‘s “Rain.”
And despite being able to place certain elements of Wind Walkers, it’s difficult to actually say who they sound like, and who they would be for fans of – because every song is different.
And it’s not different in a way that feels disjointed because the songs are all united by their exploration and the common thread of melodic metal riffs.
“Silk & Static,” “Eating My Heart Out,” and “The End Aesthetic” are off Wind Walker‘s upcoming EP, I Don’t Belong Here, due out on October 3rd.
Until the release of the EP, they’re opening for Our Last Night on their final tour before their retirement. Honestly, I’d get tickets just to see Wind Walkers, and then I’d head home for my 10pm bedtime.
