YUNGBLUD Reflects On Career-Defining Performance At BLACK SABBATH’s Final Show: “Weekends Like That Remind You That You Know Nothing”

Dominic Harrison — better known to the world as Yungblud — has had his share of landmark moments, but few compare to what unfolded in Birmingham this past weekend. Sharing a stage with rock icons like James Hetfield, Scott Ian, Chad Smith, Billy Corgan, and Brian May, Yungblud paid tribute to the legacy of Black Sabbath at what was billed as the band’s final ever show in their hometown.
“It’s been life changing, honestly,” Harrison said in an interview with NME. “You feel like you get to a level but then weekends like that remind you that you know nothing. I’m so happy though. Being in Birmingham with practically every rockstar who I had on my wall as a kid was wild. There was Scott Ian from Anthrax, James Hetfield, Chad Smith, Billy Corgan… it was one of those weekends where you know you have to step up.”
The highlight of the night for many was Yungblud‘s raw, emotional performance of “Changes”, the 1972 Black Sabbath ballad from Vol. 4 — a moment that caught both the crowd and his peers by surprise. Surrounded by towering figures of heavy music, the genre-bending artist knew he had something to prove.
“I knew it was going to be a tough audience for me because it was all metalheads and a lot of people did not think I had the right to be there,” Harrison admitted. “Brian May sent me a message after the gig that said ‘the silence from those people was deafening’. I think it’s finally clicking for a lot of non-believers.”
The decision to take on “Changes” wasn’t random — it was a deliberate, personal move that Harrison fought for in the lead-up to the tribute. “I wanted it. Tom Morello put the whole thing together and I said ‘give me the ballad’. He wasn’t so sure but I told him ‘Trust me, I’ll bring the house down’.”
On the pressure to perform, Harrison added: “As soon as I got on stage, I forgot about everything else. I was me saying thank you to my fucking hero. Backstage there were artists that collectively have probably sold a billion records, and Black Sabbath started it for all of us. I wasn’t nervous though, I was exactly where I needed to be.”
If you haven’t seen that cover, you need to watch it below. It’s unreal. Speaking of Yungblud, the man himself has a new movie coming called YUNGBLUD. ARE YOU READY, BOY? being released globally in cinemas on August 20 and 24 via Trafalgar Releasing.
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Paul Dugdale, the film captures Yungblud in Berlin’s legendary Hansa Studios as he records live performances of tracks from Idols, his third UK No.1 album.
