Subsonic Eye – Fruitcake
Released on December 17th, Singaporean rockers Subsonic Eye returned with ‘Fruitcake’, the second track to be taken from their upcoming third studio album, ‘Nature of Things’, which is due to be released on January 15th 2021.
The track is populated with a high-tempo drum beat and frenetic guitar riffs. Singer Nur Wahidah is a girl trapped inside her own internal strife, which sees all sides of her personality fighting within her. The lyric “she’s a trainwreck / nailed to ideas / can’t break out again” pretty much sums this up. She then moves into an almost spoken-word section.
The constant shifting and changing up of styles throughout the song reflect the chaos inside Wahidah’s mind. By the end she hopefully finds some peace as her journey ends with her, resigned, finally being able to see a way out from her internal chaos.
‘Fruitcake’ shows that Subsonic Eye’s third album marks a progression for the band. From the energy of raw youth to the reflective nature of maturity. As they say themselves, “Our old songs were gibberish, but our new songs have meaning to them.”
