Habitants – Morgen
‘Morgen’ (translating as ‘tomorrow’) is the new track from Dutch group Habitants, a triple-female led alternative rock band founded by Rene Rutten, guitarist and producer for The Gathering. Combining night-invoking shoegaze layers with soft acoustic guitar and classical-esque synths, ‘Morgen’ is a six-minute epic which also happens to be one of my favourite tracks of the year.
If you could ever describe a song as ‘slow-burn’, this is that song. Opening slowly and soulfully, it maintains that energy throughout, yet the soft female vocal adds a layer of emotion – this is a must-listen for fans of London Grammar.
The song builds and builds into a crescendo, containing a deeper, heavier guitar riff, which brings ‘Morgen’ to a natural conclusion. The use of sound effects in the backing is first-class, making it worthy for a soundtrack.
The song is about the transience of love – what happens when someone decides to break away from a love which seemed unbreakable? Dark and beautiful in equal measure, this is the second single from their upcoming album, due to be released in 2021. Having also listened to ‘Bury The Earth’, the sheer brilliance of this release is more than a one-off. If the rest of the album sounds this good, it will be a force to be reckoned with.
