Cultures – Shake

Originating from Greater Manchester, across the past four years Cultures have gained a reputation for an intelligent and idiosyncratic sound, straddling alt-rock and indie pop. So far, they have performed at Manchester’s Night & Day Cafe, and have even headlined at The Deaf Institute, cementing their position as one of the city’s most promising new bands.

‘Shake’ is their new single, and it’s hard to not draw comparisons with The Killers when you hear its stadium-ready, anthemic melody. It’s an extremely uplifting listen, and it put a smile on my face as I played it. When we’re allowed to have big parties again, this is one I can see myself playing to the crowd and singing along with all of my friends too; ‘Shake’ is definitely one of my favourite tracks of the moment.

As frontman Josh Spivey remarks, the track has a deeper meaning in the current context than originally expected when it was conceived:

“The song is about the realisation that you don’t need to escape the place you’re in if you’ve got someone who helps you escape in your mind. We started writing the song in winter…and as we finished it off this spring, it took on a whole new meaning as we all of a sudden found ourselves trapped and wanting to escape our homes and towns for a very different reason”.
