Giant And The Georges – Mexico

Giant and the Georges

Birmingham Indie darlings Giant and the Georges have dramatically switched up their sound on their latest release ‘Mexico’. Whilst the unforgettable, catchy melodies and infectious riffs are still present, it is the pleasantly surprising addition of trumpets and congas which give their new single a distinct mariachi twist.

Despite its brief runtime, the group have managed to pack so much into this short 2 minute track. Striking instrumental passages? Check. A feature from The Twangs’ very own Ash Sheehan? Check. Lyrics supporting Mexican migrants and attacking the actions of former US president Donald Trump? You betcha.

Perhaps the songs greatest asset is how seamlessly it pulls off the amalgamation of Mariachi and Alternative Rock. At no point during the song does the integration of the genres feel at all gimmicky: this is impressive considering it would have been all too easy to stumble into this territory. In fact, the merging of the two sonically different styles makes for an indie track which feels exciting and fresh (which is not an easy thing to do in 2021.)

Furthermore, I feel the need to underline the excellence of the vocal performance on this track. The vocal delivery adds to this truly unique sound that Giant and the Georges are creating and I cannot wait to see where this takes them in the future.
