Hayley Mary – Would You Throw A Diamond?
‘Would You Throw a Diamond?’ is the latest excellent release from Hayley Mary, who came to fame as the frontwoman of Aussie band The Jezebels.
This is another pop-rock banger with an anthemic energy which never lets up. A grungey sound with a modern take on melancholy and relationships, this track is arena-ready and an absolute stomper. I absolutely love Hayley’s vocals here and I think it’s a perfect song to showcase her talents. The track was written during Australia’s lockdown last year with Hayley’s partner Johnny (from the DMA’s). Catchy as hell, it proves that Hayley possesses the pop sensibility which saw her former band reach such heights and success.
Her solo music, however, is a clear change in direction from her band’s art, with the indie queen of Australia taking inspiration from timeless legends such as Kate Bush. Last year, she released her debut solo EP, ‘The Piss, The Perfume’, which was written as an ode to her Sydney life from her home in Scotland. If this, along with her excellent most recent single ‘The Chain’, is part of her upcoming debut solo album, which she spent much of last year working on, you would be a fool to miss out on it.
