Venus Grrrls – Goth Girl
“I wanna be a Goth Girl!” is the proclamation from Venus Grrrls at the chorus of their latest release and I have to say, if being a goth girl sounds this good, sign me up too!
‘Goth Girl’ is the latest single from Leeds-based queens of riot Venus Grrrls and it’s a symphony of indie-rock gold.
The build at the beginning sees lead singer Grace “GK” Kelly’s powerhouse of a vocal sit alongside chugging percussion before exploding into a furore of incredible sound.
If you could bottle the punch the chorus delivers when it first kicks in, there’d be no need for drugs in society.
‘Goth Girls’ chorus lifts the track into the stratosphere, oh and good luck getting it out of your head over the subsequent few days. But when it sounds this good, why wouldn’t you want it living rent free upstairs?
Taking inspiration from Bikini Kill’s – ‘Rebel Girl’, Venus Grrrls are using powerful tracks like ‘Goth Girl’ to champion female empowerment.
Lead singer GK has this to say about the track: “’Goth Girl’ is most definitely a story, there is a running order to it. It begins painting a picture of two friends hanging out, who eventually realise their struggles for their choice of clothes and makeup.”
Of the song’s female approbation roots she said: “The idea of empowering each other and holding each other up high, I was thinking about this when writing the lyrics to Goth Girl. I wanted there to be this figure in it that I could bond with.”
All we know is ‘Goth Girl’ is a stunning reintroduction to the striking ability this northern collective has. Surely, if the sounds carry on in this vein the skies the limit. I wanna be a goth girl too!
‘Goth Girl’ is out January 22nd.
