YNES – Fake What Your Mama Gave Ya

YNES

Coventry based artist YNES released her tongue in cheek new single ‘Fake What Your Mama Gave Ya’ on May 20th. Ripped from her upcoming EP ‘Overgrown Rebel’, the single provides fans with the first pointers towards YNES’ new direction.

Without question, 2021 was a euphoric year for YNES, punctuated by performances at BigFoot Festival and The Isle of Wight Festival. On the backend of a headline UK tour and ahead of an appearance at Glastonbury, ‘Fake What Your Mama Gave Ya’ speaks volumes of YNES’ recent success. The track is brimming with BritPop swagger, lyrically riffing on “council flats” amongst an “urban jungle”. The chorus is exploding with jangly guitars and punchy percussion, a further nod to the 90’s as a source of inspiration.

Despite sounding familiar by formula, YNES delivers her lines with refreshing transparency, such honesty seldom found amongst her genre contemporaries. She makes no attempt at romanticisation; ‘Fake What Your Mama Gave Ya’ is abundantly bleak and brash in equal measure. Buried beneath the instrumental bravado and BritPop facade, YNES wears her heart on her sleeve, a feisty first taste of ‘Overgrown Rebel’.
