This afternoon, on October 11th, Ian Watkins – previously of Lostprophets – was confirmed dead by Wakefield Prison. He was killed by a fellow inmate during his 35-year-stint, after being convicted of a slew of heinous child sexual offenses, and according to The Sun, it was completely unexpected.

The Sun reports Watkins‘ had his jugular slit during an ambush, subsequently dying from blood loss. His killer is known to Wakefield Prison and authorities.

Apparently, The Sun was able to get a description of the events from an inmate, who says that the murder of Ian Watkins was done “in the most brutal way possible – and the attack was shocking, even by prison standards.” The source continued to explain that:

“He was targeted by another inmate who shanked him in the neck.

“Guards were nearby and raced to the scene pretty quickly – but there was nothing they could do, and they could not save him…

“It was a horrific scene, with blood everywhere and alarms and sirens going off…

“Police and ambulances were called and the whole prison was locked down with all cons confined to their cells…

Watkins was air-lifted to hospital but they could not save him…

“He has been attacked a few times inside Wakefield over the last few years, so perhaps this was just a matter of time…

“The bloke who got him this time went for his jugular and it looks like a pre-planned attack…

Watkins was obviously high-profile and in for the most disgusting crimes…

“So that meant he was walking around with a target on his back, and this has happened…

“Despite who he was, it was really shocking and gruesome…

“Experienced officers and a lot of the other prisoners were in absolute shock after what happened and a lot of them saw the awful scene…

“The inmate who attacked him used a ‘shank’ knife and he was apprehended pretty quickly…

“There was not much doubt about who had done it.”

Watkins had been non-fatally stabbed back in 2023 during his stay at Category A Wakefield, nicknamed the “Monster Mansion,” as that section of the prison holds high-profile murders, sex offenders, and terrorists. During his incarceration, he had three groupies who would regularly visit him despite his crimes that led to a 35-year sentence.

Lostprophets vocalist Ian Watkins was convicted of 13 different crimes, including attempted rape of a minor (an 11-month-old boy) and conspiracy to rape, as well as possession of child pornography, of which 24 of the 90 images were considered to be level 5, the most vile category of all. Watkins‘ 35-year bid was never appealed in 2014.
