OZZY OSBOURNE To Be Honored At This Year’s MTV VMAs

Ozzy Osbourne‘s influence – and impact – has been undeniable. Hell, there was an entire show with some of the biggest names in metal, dedicated to Osbourne on the 5th of July. And just over two short weeks after that show in Birmingham, we lost Ozzy.
Since then, posts, tributes, covers, dedications, and interviews haven’t just crawled out of the woodworks, they’ve tripped over one another to get there first.
Despite Ozzy no longer being physically with is, he is far from forgotten. From his biography that is still due to be released in October, to the documentary the BBC is (hopefully) going to run, to the film of Back To The Beginning being released on Paramount+ in late 2025, to the continuance of the Ozzy Osbourne museum in Birmingham until the end of 2025, to Yungblud covering “Changes” in every performance he does for the rest of his life… Ozzy is far from gone.
And the celebrations of his life, legacy, and contributions to the music industry are continuing at this year’s MTV VMAs ceremony. It’s reported that Ozzy Osbourne will be honoured on stage by a group consisting of Joe Perry (Aerosmith), Nuno Bettencourt (Extreme), Steven Tyler (Aerosmith), and Yungblud performing a tribute. It serves as a reunion for most of the members as Bettencourt, Tyler, and Yungblud performed at the aforementioned Back To The Beginning show.
Back To The Beginning was a cultural moment for the metal community as bands like Gojira, Guns N’ Roses, Lamb Of God, Mastodon, Metallica, Pantera, Slayer, Tool, and more came together in Black Sabbath‘s hometown of Birmingham in England to celebrate Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne‘s legacy at their last ever show. Selling all 45,000 tickets in less than 20 minutes with over 150,000 people waiting in the virtual queue for tickets and reported by The Guardian that 5 million people streamed the performance live online, it not only celebrated what created the music we have now, but introduced the newer generation of metal listeners to what came before and shaped the scene we loe.
There aren’t really any other rock bands on the bill to perform at the VMAs, but if you’re interested in tuning in to see the tribute to Ozzy Osbourne, the VMAs will be airing live on Sunday, September 7th at 8 p.m. ET on both MTV and CBS, and is available for streaming on Paramount+.
