Elon Musk Promises AI-Generated ‘Odyssey’ Remake After Nolan Film Success
Elon Musk continues to express his frustration regarding Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, a film that has successfully defied online criticism from the right and shattered box office records during its opening days. The billionaire, who frequently claims an affinity for Homeric epics, is so incensed by the film’s reception that he has pledged to produce an entirely AI-generated, “historically accurate” adaptation of the classic work.
“Before this year ends, Grok Imagine will make a full-length movie of The Odyssey that is historically accurate and true to the art of Homer,” Musk wrote Tuesday night on his social media platform, X. The post, which remains pinned to the top of his profile, underscores his commitment to the project.
In subsequent interactions on the platform, Musk indicated a willingness to provide Mel Gibson with $100 million to helm an adaptation featuring “painstakingly historically accurate ships, armour, weapons, and casting, with all dialogue taken straight from the original poem and delivered in Homeric Greek.” For context, the production budget for Nolan’s film was $250 million.
Musk shared a three-minute sample clip of what his AI-driven vision might entail, though the teaser—which depicts a scene between Odysseus and the nymph Calypso—has been met with skepticism. Critics have pointed out that the AI-generated imagery relies heavily on tropes and lacks the depth of human artistic labor. The depiction of characters, including a Calypso with modern aesthetic sensibilities and sirens in budget-style attire, stands in stark contrast to the “historically accurate” standard Musk claims to pursue.
The tension between Musk and the current cinematic landscape is not new. Months ago, when news broke that Christopher Nolan had cast actors like Lupita Nyong’o and Elliot Page in his production, Musk publicly criticized the director, claiming he was “pissing on Homer’s grave.”
Ultimately, the debate centers on the value of humanism in art. By stripping the Homeric works of the human touch, Musk’s proposed project risks becoming a mere product of algorithmic calculation. As far as art is concerned, the reliance on AI to mimic the work of scholars and creatives suggests a fundamental misunderstanding of the very stories Musk claims to cherish.
