‘Mixed Feelings’ is a song by OnTheTree, the project of young Bulgarian artist Marti Stefanova, a self-taught musician and producer. On the press release for the track Stefanova states that the song is “about my parents splitting up for a while and then getting back together. I wrote it at the time when my dad was moving out and they were having arguments every night”.

So given the subject matter it’s not surprising that there is a slight melancholic tinge to Stefanova’s vocals. That’s in contrast to the music though which feels surprisingly upbeat. Cool beats uplift the track giving it an old school hip hop feel and there is also an experimental vibe going on.

It all combines for a charming bedroom pop song that is a joy to listen to.
