Phil Collins Reveals He Nearly Died in 2024 Amid Alcohol Addiction
Legendary musician Phil Collins has revealed the harrowing details of a 2024 health crisis that brought him to the brink of death. In a candid interview with the Sunday Times, the Genesis icon shared that his long-standing battle with alcohol addiction led to a life-threatening situation that required intensive care and left him unconscious.
Collins first sought medical attention at a Swiss hospital in November 2023 due to complications connected to his alcohol consumption. Although he was initially discharged before the holiday season, his condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to a readmission just weeks later. During this second stay, the singer was placed in intensive care as his body began to shut down.
A Near-Death Experience
Reflecting on the severity of the ordeal, Collins explained, “My kidneys were packing up, my organs were just seizing up. People were coming to say goodbye. But I don’t remember them coming. I didn’t have no idea this was going on. They were all worried that they wouldn’t see me again. It could all have gone so terribly wrong.”
The situation became so dire that his five children were summoned to the hospital to face the agonizing decision of whether to keep their father on life support. Following a grueling seven-month recovery period, Collins expressed deep gratitude for his survival. “I was very lucky to have come out of that,” he stated, confirming that he has remained sober since the incident.
A Long Road to Recovery
The singer has been transparent about his struggles with alcohol in the past, often citing the physical toll of persistent back injuries as a contributing factor. In his 2016 memoir, he wrote openly about the isolation he felt while dealing with chronic pain, noting that he often turned to alcohol to cope with his circumstances. Earlier this year, Collins also discussed the “difficult, frustrating few years” he endured following five separate surgeries on his knee, which necessitated 24-hour nursing care.
While he previously mentioned spending months in the hospital, this latest revelation provides the most comprehensive account of how close he came to losing his life. By sharing his story, the music legend hopes to shed light on the reality of addiction and the importance of seeking help before it is too late.
