PARADISE LOST Stays Gloomy On New Single “Tyrants Serenade”

Legends of doom and gothic metal, Paradise Lost have unleashed their riveting third single, “Tyrants Serenade” — a four-plus-minute opus of towering riffs, mournful melodies, and emotional weight that stands as a bleak yet beautiful new chapter in the band’s storied catalog. The track appears on their much-anticipated new album, Ascension, due September 19 through Nuclear Blast Records.
Vocalist Nick Holmes offers insight into the song’s thematic depth: “Observing the death of an individual, and subsequently, how the transition of seasons evokes fond memories. The God of Malevolence serves as an internal voice to dismantle those cherished memories and reintroduces the initial anguish of loss.”
Musically, “Tyrants Serenade” sees Paradise Lost at their most dynamic — merging crushing, doom-laden guitar tones with sweeping, melodic leads, and pairing Holmes’ signature harsh growls with soaring clean vocal refrains. The result is an anthem that resonates with both grandeur and grief.
The single arrives alongside a striking visual companion directed by longtime collaborator Ash Pears (Host, Bloodbath, Katatonia), whose cinematic approach amplifies the track’s dark romanticism and thematic intensity.
Ascension‘s album cover fittingly features the painting The Court of Death (1870-1902) by renowned British artist George Frederic Watts, which hangs in the Tate Gallery in London. The painting depicts Death as an enthroned angel flanked by allegorical figures of Silence and Mystery guarding sunrise and the star of hope, while a warrior surrenders his sword and a duke his coronet, showing that worldly status offers no protection. The painting’s bleak, prophetic vision embodies Ascension‘s dark, tormented soundscapes as mournful verses collide with dire, foreboding riffs.
On the record, Holmes continued: “Ascension is a cavalcade of molten misery, a vigorous sorrow filled stroll through a wicked world of glorious triumph and pitiful tragedy.” Pre-orders are available here.
