Melanie Martinez Pays Tribute to Late Ex-Boyfriend Oliver Tree

Melanie Martinez has paid tribute to her ex-boyfriend, Oliver Tree, fondly recalling his “soft heart” and describing him as “a true artist in every way” following the singer’s untimely death on Sunday.

Tree, born Oliver Tree Nickell and widely recognized for viral hits such as “Life Goes On” and “Alien Boy,” was among six individuals killed when two helicopters collided in Rio de Janeiro. He was 32 years old.

Martinez expressed her profound shock and heartbreak regarding the news on Sunday. The two artists dated between 2019 and 2020, and Martinez had previously noted that the pair maintained a respectful relationship after their mutual decision to part ways.

“Been an absolute wreck today,” Martinez wrote in an Instagram story. “It’s really hard to understand how someone who you once shared such a specific and formative time of your life with can all of a sudden be gone. He was so dedicated to his art which I admired and respected so deeply.”

She continued, “I think everyone who knew him will look back at those moments of laughter and joy he so easily sparked. His laugh was so contagious and warm. His ability to lead creatively and take action while also maintaining a sense of childlike wonder and awe was so inspiring. He had such a soft heart and was a true artist in every way.”

Martinez concluded her tribute with a final message: “Rest in peace Oliver. I know you’re making the angels giggle. I’ll be here wondering what stunt and creative project you’re scheming up in heaven.”

Nickell had been visiting Rio de Janeiro following a performance in Sao Paolo, Brazil, as he concluded the South American leg of his inaugural world tour. His next scheduled appearance was set for July in Europe.

The music community has mourned the loss, with artists including Kid Cudi, T-Pain, and Bebe Rexha sharing their condolences. “Fuck man,” Kid Cudi wrote on X. “Spoke to Oliver a few weeks ago. This is heartbreaking. A really amazing and beautiful human. This shit sucks bad.”

Bebe Rexha also shared her grief, stating, “I was in the middle of my cd signing in nyc when I found the news of Oliver tree. We recorded a record together to be on dirty blonde. He was so smart. Passionate. Talented. Kind. I’m so sad. May he rest in peace.”
