Dua Lipa Sues Samsung for $15 Million Over Unauthorized Image Use
Pop superstar Dua Lipa has initiated legal action against Samsung, filing a $15 million lawsuit in a California district court. The complaint alleges that the electronics manufacturer engaged in unauthorized commercial exploitation of her likeness by featuring her image on cardboard television boxes.
According to the legal filing obtained by Rolling Stone, the singer’s complaint cites “copyright infringement, trademark infringement, and violation of her right of publicity.” The lawsuit contends that Samsung utilized a copyrighted photograph of Lipa—taken backstage at the 2024 Austin City Limits Festival—to promote the Xite Hits channel on its Samsung TV Plus platform.
A Dispute Over Commercial Rights
The legal team representing Lipa emphasizes that while the singer has maintained high-profile partnerships with luxury brands such as Chanel, Tiffany & Co., and Apple, she never entered into a promotional agreement with Samsung. The lawsuit argues that the company’s decision to place her image on retail packaging was a deliberate attempt to capitalize on her “notoriety and goodwill” without proper licensing.
“Ms. Lipa brings this action against Samsung for copyright infringement, trademark infringement, and violation of her right of publicity in order to obtain redress for the massive, continuing, unauthorized commercial exploitation of her valuable image and likeness by Samsung on cardboard television boxes,” the document states.
Allegations of Willful Infringement
The complaint further alleges that Samsung remained “dismissive and callous” when confronted with repeated demands to cease the use of the image. The lawsuit claims that the company’s refusal to stop the distribution of the branded packaging demonstrates a “conscious disregard” for the singer’s intellectual property rights.
The singer reportedly became aware of the unauthorized usage in June 2025, when fans began sharing images of the “Dua Lipa TV Box” on social media. The lawsuit highlights that some consumers expressed an intent to purchase the television specifically because of the singer’s presence on the packaging, which the legal team claims proves that Samsung was improperly benefiting from an implied, false association with the artist.
The complaint concludes by seeking damages of no less than $15 million, citing the need to address the willful infringement and the misappropriation of Lipa’s identity for the promotion of mass-marketed consumer electronics.
